Mentorship for Therapists

Your client with religious trauma left you speechless… Again.

What was normalized in your client’s religious background was dark. Grad school didn’t prepare you for this. You learned about families where generational trauma was present, but what about religious groups with thousands of families that not only perpetuate harm but celebrate it? You feel dysregulated in your body as you’re hearing about your client’s religious history, but they appear calm. You wonder, “Why are they here?” When you try to put yourself in their shoes, you can’t comprehend developing the resilience that your client has. And you question your skills as a therapist, and your client’s purpose for being in therapy. Your client says that they’re bothered by their religious past, but when you bring up somatic practices, emotion wheels, and the therapy skills you’re familiar with, your client seems to be doing well. You’re at a loss about how to move forward in working with your client.

you’re frozen in the fear of saying the wrong thing to your clients with religious trauma.

About Kit’s Approach to Mentorship

You didn’t think twice passing by multi-denominations of churches on your drives to work until one of your clients opened up about their religious trauma. Then another one, and another. And now you can’t drive past churches without thinking of your clients and how to help them better.

The tried-and-true interventions that worked well for other clients don’t seem to be as effective for your clients with religious trauma. And imposter syndrome creeps into your life and work. You’re learning more from your clients with religious trauma than they are from you, it seems. Even though your clients with religious trauma may appear successful to others, they tell you how helpless they feel to live the kind of life that they want. And you secretly feel just as helpless to guide them towards their goals.

Kit Morgan, LCSW was raised in the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist and Southern Baptist religious groups and grew up alongside families from other authoritarian-led Christian and Jewish groups that were in their hometown of South Bend, Indiana.

Education and mentorship became ways that Kit found freedom from indoctrination during their childhood and adolescence. Kit was formally trained in Christian Counseling, restorative justice, qualitative research methodology, and accessible mental health education pedagogy. Kit holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor of Christian Counseling from Liberty University and Master of Social Work from Indiana University. Kit is currently a doctoral student of clinical sexology from the acclaimed Modern Sex Therapy Institutes.

Kit has conducted research in attachment theory for The University of Notre Dame and addictions treatment concerns for Indiana University. Kit has served as a guest lecturer for Colgate University and The State University of New York about human identity development and best clinical practices for religious trauma survivors that are gender-affirming and sex-positive. Kit’s work has been honored in 2026 by Marquis Who’s Who for the innovation that they are bringing to the field of mental health in clinical treatment for religious trauma.

the investment of mentorship for your therapy practice

Mentorship at The Liberated Porch costs $130 CAD (Approx. $100 USD) per session and can be considered a tax write-off for professional development.

Mentorship at The Liberated Porch is for therapists who are licensed or pre-licensed. Please note that mentorship at The Liberated Porch is not a replacement for supervision required by licensing boards for pre-licensed therapists pursuing professional licensure.

Therapists find clarity and increased confidence in their work with religious trauma survivors between 1 to 4 mentorship sessions with Kit Morgan, LCSW. Recommendation for the amount of mentorship sessions may vary, depending upon pre-existing training, prior clinical and educational experience, preceding knowledge of authoritarian-led religious and/or spiritual groups, complexity of cases, and the amount of religious trauma survivors on your current caseload. While therapists may feel like one mentorship session satisfies their practice’s needs, other therapists prefer multiple sessions or ongoing mentorship for continued professional growth.
